E. Davis
Museum Executive Director
Steven
E. Davis, who has directed science education programs and
developed educational exhibits for several different organizations,
became executive director of the Rocky Flats Cold War Museum
in June, 2002.
He
was hired to help the fledgling board develop a museum to
interpret the historical, scientific and environmental legacy
of Rocky Flats, the former nuclear weapons plant in northern
Jefferson County. The museum will also educate the public
about Rocky Flats, the Cold War and their legacies through
the preservation of key artifacts and development of interpretive,
educational and outreach programs.
Davis
directed science education programs, exhibitions and community
partnerships at the Gulfcoast Wonder and Imagination Zone,
a regional science and technology center in Sarasota, Florida,
which attracts more than 100,000 annual visitors. He also
directed the Exhibit-Based Teaching Partnership, a national
pilot program sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning
of the San Francisco-based Exploratorium Museum.
He
said the efforts to create a cold war museum at Rocky Flats
are "ambitious and very exciting." He said, "The
power of well-done exhibits to engage audiences to help tell
the story of Rocky Flats can be very effective. We have a
great opportunity to ensure that the legacy of Rocky Flats
will help inform future decisions about the uses of technology."
From
mid 1996 to late 1999, Davis was director of outreach for
the Integrated Teaching and Learning Laboratory of the University
of Colorado's College of Engineering and Applied Science in
Boulder.
He
was exhibits program coordinator for the National Center for
Atmospheric Research in Boulder from 1990 to 1996, where he
developed "Thunderstorm Detectives," a traveling
exhibition and educational program that toured 21 science
museums and airports over a three year period. Davis also
served as public information officer for the Solar Energy
Research Institute in Golden from 1978 to mid 1982.
Davis
has a B.A. in political science and international studies
from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He has an
M.A. in teaching from Reed College in Portland, Oregon, and
an M.S. in the technology and modernization program at the
Graduate School of International Studies at the University
of Denver.
